Monday - July 11, 2005ERNESTO WITH A SCRAGLY BEARD
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The one thing that signified a vacation, as long as I wasn't going to go anywhere, was to stop shaving. Something I can't do when I work. I didn't have any specific plan on how long it would go on. I knew it would be at least a couple of days (something I usually do on weekends.) Linda, on the other hand, wanted me to grow a beard.... After three days, it began to itch like crazy, specially in bed. I would wake up in the middle of the night and I would scratch it for a while until sleep took the better of me. In any case, I wanted to record the event, so here are a few snaps.. ![]() ![]() These pictures show about a 6 day grow. I think I took these right before I shaved. ![]() Here are some pictures either before or after exercise Thursday - July 07, 2005Sunday - June 26, 2005CAFE LURCATThe

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Somehow I can't get around the fact that this was the Loring, and I spent lots of great moments in this space. However, those memories are beginning to recede and Cafe Lurcat, at least the bar, is becoming a nice place to go to. So here we are on a Sunday afternoon. Drinking beer and enjoying the small secluded patio. Today it is very crowded, with lots of spill over from Loring Park. It is nice and hot, and we are lucky enough (knock on wood) to get a table within five minutes of getting here. The thumping club music from a DJ somewhere inside, causes people to nod or tap on rythm. Linda and I, cameras on hand, shoot widely. We see a few people we know. Some more than others. Roger sits with friends. Linda thinks that Chantal, someone she worked with at Britts is also here. We order calamari, which arrives with an Asian influenced dip. The tartness of the rice vinegar mixing very well with something sweet. We go quickly through the breaded calamari, and asked for more beer...Two hour laters, wiped out from the heat but happy from the beer, we walk home to hide in the cool air conditioned apartment. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So here we are in the middle of Loring Park, during Gay Pride. Singles, groups, and yes Couples walk by. Everyone walks on circles stopping by to chat to people they know, or buy something from the many vendors. People sit on the grass watching many open air events, including the popular transvestite shows. Many people show bare breasts of all kinds. Some have tattoos, others are in costume. Many have t-shirts on. Most t-shirts are about the message....A girl sporting a t-shirt that boldly says What Boyfriend? . The main message this year appears to be all about marriage rights. Maybe people (gays and lesbians) wear red stickers with Marry Me in white letters. Most of the pictures I took have been cropped to highlight the message...That is what it is about. Check out the t-shirts ![]() This girl has a backpack very much to the point..... . ![]() Here is something obvious Saturday - June 25, 2005SOLERA FOR TAPAS AND DRINKSSolera

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Gay Pride. Very crowded everywhere. Saturday night, head out to Solera to try out the roof-deck. We arrive to a crowded roof-deck, but we get in no problem. Somehow, we don't have to pay the $5 cover. The DJ hasn't started yet. We bring beers from downstairs. There are no tables or chairs, so we head for the fence, where we can rest against it, and look at the city skyline. We are right above the Saloon, which is completely packed. At one point a street demonstration in support of G:TB goes by. The whole atmosphere is very festive. The crowd is pretty mixed tonight. The DJ gets going at 10pm. An hour later it is packed. A few people dance, but most are here in small groups. When we run out of beer we go to the bar and wait on line for 10 minutes to get a drink. We get vodka tonics and stay a while longer. Later on we get hungry. so we go downstairs for tapas. We sit at the long middle table in the bar area. A stink-punk couple sit almost isolated. No one can stand their smell. We sit far from them and order. We get Patatas Bravas, Piquillos, and Spanish cheese with quince . To drink we have Marques de Caceres Rose. Friday - June 24, 2005SAWATDEE 6/24/2005Sawatdee

co-workers
![]() ![]() ![]() It is not until we are outside the museum, in this very hot day, that we change plans for lunch. This is not very rare for this group. Choosing a restaurant can be a veritable major affair. We finally decide to go to Sawatdee for lunch, mostly because it is really nice and hot, and we want to sit on the patio. Linda (who is taking a day off today), picks Lori, Keith and I. Emily C. and Kristina stay behind to call Rachael and Emily H to see if they want to come along. We arrive first and are given two tables for the group, because they can only accommodate 4 people each. Our waitress appears very frazzled, she scurries back and forth inside and out. There is only one other table with people outside, but our food and drinks take a while to get to us. My Pad Thai is hotter than usual (did she get confused with what we asked for?). On the other hand, it is very nice outside. The sun shines through, and while it is very hot it doesn't feel too humid. We talk about cats. Something we all deal with. Two for Keith, two for Lori, and one for Linda and me. An hour and a half later, individual payments made to the frazzled waitress inside, left-over-containers on hand, we head back to work. ![]() ![]() My reflection on a spoon. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We are trying to figure out where to go on Friday. Lori suggests Bobino . It is close to Lori's and Emily's, it will also be easier to park. I bike home, and wait for Linda to pick me up. Lori and Emily are already there when we arrive. We sit at a table with an umbrella, it's still early, and not too busy. We sit back and order drinks..TanquereyTonic for Emily, A Straberry Bedi for Lori (what is that?) Bombay Martini for Linda, and a Mojito for me. (the mojito is not on par with Chino Latino or Azia's.) We also order some food. Lori orders a stuffed crepe -Emmentaler cheese, wild mushrooms, spring onions-. We order a cheese plate for the table. It has Manchego, Pecorino, and a blue cheese, buckwheat honey, apples, and grapes. They also bring an Amuse Bouche for each one of us. A single raspberry with mascapone, balsamic, and buckwheat honey. Emily and Linda see friends. Linda's is a high school friend she hasn't seen in years... We have a few drinks and enjoy a relaxed afternoon. Afterwards we drive Lori home. ![]() ![]() Sunday - June 12, 2005Sunday - June 12, 2005SPOON AT FIRST AVENUESpoon
Concert at First Avenue
![]() ![]()
Spoon turns out to be a pretty good concert at First Avenue . We go after Linda hears them on the Current . The concert is one of those all-ages-shows that start very early, and even though it is Sunday we don't feel like spending a lot of daylight hours inside First Avenue. We chance it and go at 7:30pm, calculating how much the warm-up-band will take. We arrive very thirsty, after running around Calhoun, so we head upstairs for beer. I order a large Newcastle and Linda gets Sprite. We find out we can't go in the main room until we are done with our drinks. We can see it is getting pretty crowded and soon it will be hard to get a good space. We slam the drinks down, and find a space on the ramp, left of the stage. A long haired heavy guy stands to the left, and in front of us. Throughout the concert he dances, his hair ending up on everyone's face. The band is very good. Afterwards we, and everyone else, heads for the exit. It is still light outside when we come out. A street musician plays the drums. People gather to smoke. We go home. Summer is finally here. Hopefully no more teasing with warm then colder days. Today it was very warm. We bring the usual basket full of tapa-like dishes. Sardines, Feta, Calamatas, red bell peppers, hummus, pita bread, greens, cantelope, and very cold Fosters. Pooper joins us. She eats some sardines and some feta. Then it is back inside for her to get her full 18 hours of sleep a day. ![]() ![]() Summer spread. Al Vento Italian Restaurant Al Vento is a smallish Italian neighborhood (South Minneapolis restaurant) that offers a nice selection of Southern Italian cuisine and wines from Italy. We had wanted to go for quite a while, particularly after reading Dara Moskowit's rave review on City Pages. The restaurant offers outdoor seating in a more casual atmosphere. Inside, the dining room is a perfect place for a romantic date. A small intimate room, , candle-lit and white-table-cloth tables fill the space. A simple and elegant bar is located at the rear. Walls are covered with large mirrors and warm lights. On this, our first visit to the restaurant, we had made a reservation for a table inside. Service was impeccable throughout. We were served by more than three different people, not including the hostess, who came to check on things towards the end.. Our table was ready as soon as we arrived. A server came to offer sparkling water, we chose S. Pellegrino (which of course they added to the bill). For dinner we ordered a great Octopus salad with potatoes, Caesar Salad, Red Chard Ravioli with fresh mozzarella and a tangy tomato sauce, a fillet of Halibut with Spinach Risotto and asparagus, a bottle of Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva, and espressos. The food was very well made. The octopus salad was delicious. Large pieces of octopus marinated in a balsamic vinaigrette which gave them a slightly sweet flavor. The Caesar salad was just the perfect size. A few dark green romaine hearts, covered with authentic caesar dressing (although they don't prepare it in fron of you). The halibut was sensational (very much on par with the fish I had at 112 Eatery). The spinach risotto, and asparagus, a perfect complement to the fish. Jones was giving a free rehearsal of his new work As I Was Saying... (World Premiere) at the Walker Art Center. The rehearsal was open and free to the public, so how could we pass it up? The dressed rehearsal amounted to a good 45 minutes of excerpts of As I was Saying. After that there was a Q&A session with the company. Some excerpts from the work were great. In particular a duet with the two male dancers, dancing synchroneously to a citar like instrument, and a piece at the end with Bill T. Jones and the two dancers to African music. There was also some dancing to spoken word. The stage was very minimal. A grid on the floor, and a large screen at the rear. As with most modern pieces, there was a screening intermixed with the dance. There was also a live violinist playing the Chaconne on stage with Bill T. Jones dancing. The Q&A session was very intersting. This is where I found, for example that the spoken pieces included a segment where a conversation between John Cage and Merce Cunningham is juxtaposed with Bill T. Jones mother. After the concert we went to 20.21 for a couple of beers and a bite to eat. We sat at a table by the bar, and ordered Summits and a Hamachi salad made of cured tuna and red onions. The sushi-grade tuna was so soft, it almost melted it in your mouth. billtJones Dancers at Bill T Jones As I was Saying rehearsal Sunday - May 29, 2005CHINO LATINO 5/29/2005Chino

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We didn't feel like cooking and it was pretty late anyway. Chino Latino seemed to be a good choice for a late night snack. Uptown was pretty deserted (Memorial Day weekend and all), but Chino, as always was hopping. We got a small table by the sushi bar. Ordered a Mojito for me, and a Bombay Saphire for LB. We also shared what turned out to be way too much to eat. an order of Tuna Tataki, a Pescado Ahumado (swordfish broiled in a mesquite oven, with chips salsa and guacamole), we also had crab cakes . Afterwards we had fortune cookies with just about the lamest fortunes I've seen. Mine said something like .."You will get a free 8 week subscription to the Minneapolis Tribune". ..... Linda and I went with a group of my co-workers, including Kristina, Sean, Rachael, Emily C, and Lori to Palimino's for a quick bite before the concert. We had purchased tickets in advance, which made sense once we got to First Avenue and saw the long lines to get in. Tickets on hand, we went in pretty quickly. We headed for the second floor, where we had agreed to meet with Lori, who had gone to meet her boyfriend, Charlie. I headed for one of the bars and ordered a gigantic Newcastle, then beer on hand I pulled my camera and began to take a few pictures. The view from the second floor wasn't too good, and Linda Kristina and I decided to go downstairs and stake out some space. We found a great space on a ramp by the catwalk. We chatted for a long time. The space got crowded as people came in. The show finally started at 8PM with Melodious Owl a young all-male trio with a pretty caristmatic singer and designs by Molly Roark. Then came The Violettes with designs by Kristen Thoreson. And so it continued throughout the night. Each band played a 20 or 30 minute sets. Downtime between bands was around 10 minutes, perfect to catch-up or go for a beer. As usual, bands and designers got better as the night progressed. My favorite bands were Ouijia Radio a two-girl fronted band with great vocals and good tempo, Mike Gunther and His Restless Souls with a Tom Waits sounding Mike Gunther on lead vocals, and the Soviettes a mostly-female powerhouse of a band. The other bands on the line up included The TV Sound with catchy lyrics, the Olympic Hopefuls and The Deaths. Of the designers, I liked best Taissa Lada with her wonderful and sensual use of feathers (very politically incorrect, but very beautiful to look at) She had a couple of very nice bustiers, and a really nice full dress made completely of peacock feathers, and Anna Lee and Ruby 3 (Anna Lee was also the force behind Voltage05) with pretty outrageous hats (here is an interview Anna gave to Pulse about the show). I liked a number of other designs, but I can't tell anymore who's who. I remember particularly a pretty cool black dress with a spider web motif on the back. After a while, Kristina and the others left. Linda and I, and Lori and Charlie, stayed until the very end. This was so much fun, we'll make sure to go next time around. click here for the Movie and click here for pictures of the show Saturday - May 21, 2005ART A WHIRL 5/21/2005![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Art A Whirl 2005 We only had a couple of hours for this year's Art-A-Whirl . We had a movie in the afternoon, and another in the evening, so right after breakfast we headed for Northeast. We parked almost half a mile from the Northrup King Building, our first stop. We had intended to go to other places, but ran out of time. Today, we had to fly through everything. We saw a number of studios, and some art we liked. As always, going through this building and all the studio spaces reminded us of the studios we've had. We went into painting studios, visited sculptors' spaces, jewelers, and photographers. At the Ice Box Gallery we saw an exhibition of Erika Stone's photographs of New York life. We also stopped to see Susan and Barry, although Barry wasn't around. Susan was just selling a $3,000 painting as we walked in (which shows how much business is done here.) With time running out we saw a few more studios, and then it was off to the Walker for the last day of the movie festival. A movie by Sally Potter Went to see Yes , the closing film for "Women with Vision 2005 " film series at the Walker. The film uses a difficult relationship between a Western woman and a Middle Eastern man, in the aftermath of 9-11, as a metaphor to mounting complications and misunderstanding between much of the Western and Muslim world. Sally Potter, uses iambic pentameter with rhyming couplets, unusual angles, and slow motion to increase tension between the main characters in the film. After the film there was a very interesting Q and A session with Joan Allen (who played the Western woman in the film). Friday - May 20, 200520.21 RESTAURANT 5/20/200520.21

Fondant..
![]() ![]() ![]() We had just been to an incredible jazz concert at the Walker , and didn't feel like going home just yet. We headed up the stairs for 20.21 restaurant. This time around we found a high table in the bar area available immediately. We ordered a couple of Summits , and sat back to talk about the jazz concert we had seen. Later we ordered a fabulous Calamari salad. The salad came on a deep-fried thin pastry that had been molded into a cup-like form. The calamari was accompanied by cabbage, carrots, cilantro, and other greens, all of it tossed into a slightly tangy vinaigrette. Very recommended. We also ordered a Chocolate Fondant this dessert came on a plain white oval plate. Three small pieces of warm-chocolate-cake, with a scoop of coffee ice cream and a scoop of clotted cream. The warm chocolate cake was delicious. The semi-sweet chocolate filling, still hot and soft, was a perfect counterpoint to the semi-fredo ice cream and clotted cream. As soon as we found out that the restaurant would be open after the film, we decided to go for a drink... 20.21 . The new restaurant and bar by Wolfgang Puck at the Walker, is located on the second floor of the Herzog & de Meuron addition. The smallish restaurant (about 20 tables, plus bar) occupies a great space with large floor-to-ceiling windows that offer a great view of the city. The place was completely packed when we arrived. The hostess suggested we sit on one of the couches right outside the restaurant. We were thinking about it, when two spaces opened up at the bar. We took them immediately, and ordered Bombay Sapphire martinis. To Linda's horror, they came with a lemon wedge instead of olives. Soon we stroke a conversation with a woman sitting to our left. She had also seen Sequins, so we talked about the film, and other shows we had seen at the Walker... Later on, Linda and I got some food. The bartender offered a couple of complimentary amuse bouche, including a great culliflower soup. Very rich and dense, and a plate of wallnuts with haricots verts in a soy sauce. We ordered a great Tuna Sashimi . Each sliver of tuna was paper thin. In the center there was a sculptural arrangement made of shredded vegetables and strings of sea kelp. For dessert we ordered the Spoon, Cube and Cherrie. Another very sculptural presentation (a sweet edible interpretation of Oldenberg's Spoon and Cherrie) made of bittersweet chocolate cream, German chocolate cake, sour cherrie sauce. We finished off with single espressos. We ordered shrimp and yam fritters (for something different), shrimp and seabass soup, and Vietnamese iced coffee (strong coffee mixed with sweetened condensed milk). The fritters were not as good as we expected. They are very filling, and there is not a lot of shrimp in them. They are basically bar-food. The shrimp and seabass was perfect as usual. A real treat. |
