THE DARJEELING LIMITED

trailer

lb and I went to see The Darjeeling Limited. A film by Wes Anderson with Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman. The film follows three brothers that haven't seen each other since the death of their father. The trip arranged by the oldest brother played by Owen Wilson, shows us a good depiction of sibling rivalry.

Three American brothers who have not spoken to each other in a year set off on a train voyage across India with a plan to find themselves and bond with each other -- to become brothers again like they used to be. Their "spiritual quest", however, veers rapidly off-course (due to events involving over-the-counter pain killers, Indian cough syrup, and pepper spray), and they eventually find themselves stranded alone in the middle of the desert with eleven suitcases, a printer, and a laminating machine. At this moment, a new, unplanned journey suddenly begins

LES DEMOISELLES D'AVIGNON AND ART MOBS

Les Demoiselles d'Avignon

So here I was surfing through the podcast list on I-Tunes , when I came across Art Mobs and its podcasts on paintings at MOMA . I remember I had read an article on the NY Times about these art guides that were done to counteract the typical dry audio guides offered by museums. Art Mob has also been featured in Rocket Boom . Here is the link

Below is the audio guide on on Pablo Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (and the painting). here is also a link to the history of the painting from MOMA

THE MIRROR PROJECT

The Mirror Project
People all Over The World Posting Reflections

I learned about The Mirror Project through an article in the NY Times about picture blogs called USES; A Mundane Shot? If It's on a Photoblog, Someone's Interested The Mirror Project sounded interesting, so I sent a couple of pictures, then a few more...... Surfing on The Mirror Project is very addictive. There are posting from people all over the world. There are also a number of thematic galleries. I was surprised to discover pictures from someone I knew in one of those galleries. It is also fun to search on random words. For example searches on "spoon" "lola" or "blue" turn returns immediately. You can also search for specific names of people.

Below are a couple of my postings. You can also go to The Mirror Project at this link Ernesto De Quesada Linda has also started putting pictures there. Her link is Linda Beaverson

MAKING MONOTYPES

Making Monotypes

I guess i like to make monotypes because i can work fast, because some of the work is intuitive, and because the results are always surprising. Tonight I made the first monotype in like 4 years. I didn't want to think much about how it would look. I used some techniques i remembered from before, but it was mostly intuitive. So here is the recipie to make them.

1- Supplies. printers ink (you can use water soluble or oil based). Oil based is messier and more difficult to clean, but you can work with it longer before it begins to dry out.
2- Supplies. Paper and some glass (i usually have 3 or 4 different glass sizes. i also put electrician tape along the edges to make it easier to work with.
3- supplies. a good roller, and various brushes, sticks or tools that are pointed, cloth, paper towels, etc
4- spread ink evenly on glass with the roller. it is important to leave a thin even layer throughout.
5- begin working. use brushes, cloth, anything else you want.
6- take a sheet of paper and place on glass. use your hands to firmly press the paper on the glass.
7. voila. you have a monotype

PAINTING AND NEWCASTLES

Get the bug to paint again.....

My initial intention was to start with a few monotypes. Something fast and easy to do. I could also work with water-soluble ink, which would be easier in the apartment. So Yesterday, i went to Utrecht for a few art supplies and then on to Home-Depot to get plywood and tape. Covered the long table with plastic, pulled out paper, brushes, ink, and other supplies, and began to work.. After a couple of Newcastles and some good music on the i-pod, I was ready to start...

AMSTERDAM DAY 2 11/25/2004

 Amsterdam day 2. 11/25/2004
Another buffet style breakfast.  The restaurant is dark and the price is higher than Cafe American. Won't be here again.
Most of the Rijtmuseum is not available. However, there is an exhibition of highlights called the Masterworks.
Walk through Albert Cuyper Mrkt. This is the largest open market in Amsterdam. We go by incredible fish and cheese sections. Later we walk through the Pijp neighborhood.
Taart van m'n Tante for coffee & cake. This is a very quirky place that sells over the top cakes (still does) and later opened as a coffee shop. Samples of the cakes sit on all tables. Linda and i sit next to a cake covered with noses out of which protrude long green frosted buggers. We have capuccino's & a very good typsy cake
Go to Sukabumi for dinner. Sukabumi is an Indonesian restaurant on Geelvincksteeg (off Regulatsen
