BABY PIGEONS ARE BORN TODAY

Baby pigeons are born today. The mother pigeon that decided to make a nest on our balcony and lay two eggs on a discarded pot, has stubbornly remained. What appears fun to begin with ends up as a lot of work for Linda. Pigeons are pretty messy animals. We have to clean the balcony continuously, and watching them feed is a pretty gross thing. Basically the parents (both parents take turns with the chicks) regurgitate the food. The chicks go deep inside the parents' throats to get at the food. In any case, it must be a pretty effective way to feed, because they grow incredibly fast. As soon as the two youths were about to fly away (or so we thought), another brood was born. All of a sudden there were two more eggs.

The pigeons got so used to Linda cleaning the balcony, that they would tolerate her when she moved the pot around to clean. Interestingly, the two youths were so used to getting fed by their parents that even though they were as big as the parents, they would not fly away. At this point, the parents began to peck them to get them to go, but they would always come back at night and sleep while perched on the door.

Eventually we got so sick of the whole thing that we removed them by taking them to Wirth park. Hopefully they made it ok. Who knows, maybe the pot is still there.
