TABLETS, CROSSES, AND OTHER WORK

Some work from the 90s

Algun trabajo de los aƱos 90s

During the 1990s I changed my attention from large bio-morphic canvases, to flatter, more abstract, iconography. Crosses, tablets, and books became part of this new vocabulary. I also became interested in linguistic-symbolism. On how a viewer would respond to what he/she could perceive as language.

The medium and palatte remained constant. Typically I used oil-paint based mixed media, sometimes adding ash or marble dust. Some paintings incorporated several layers, which allowed me to scratch-out the paint to form these language-like symbols. This act of "excavation" became part of the process, almost like lifting the words out of the canvas. For example, for "1994 Yellow Tablet with Inscriptions", I used an exacto knife to painstakingly make each symbol.

Below are some representative paintings from that period.

Here is one of the largest paintings I have attempted. Palenque. Mixed media on canvas

White Cross with fish. 1996. Mixed media on paper and rusted wire. 26" x 26"

1994 Yellow Tablet with Inscriptions. Oil and mixed media on canvas
