MAKING MONOTYPES

Making Monotypes

I guess i like to make monotypes because i can work fast, because some of the work is intuitive, and because the results are always surprising. Tonight I made the first monotype in like 4 years. I didn't want to think much about how it would look. I used some techniques i remembered from before, but it was mostly intuitive. So here is the recipie to make them.

1- Supplies. printers ink (you can use water soluble or oil based). Oil based is messier and more difficult to clean, but you can work with it longer before it begins to dry out.
2- Supplies. Paper and some glass (i usually have 3 or 4 different glass sizes. i also put electrician tape along the edges to make it easier to work with.
3- supplies. a good roller, and various brushes, sticks or tools that are pointed, cloth, paper towels, etc
4- spread ink evenly on glass with the roller. it is important to leave a thin even layer throughout.
5- begin working. use brushes, cloth, anything else you want.
6- take a sheet of paper and place on glass. use your hands to firmly press the paper on the glass.
7. voila. you have a monotype

here is the working table

Place glass on working area

grab roller (you should have mixed your paint by now.

apply ink

cover full glass surface
