Located in Downtown South Bend Indiana, the East Race is one of the closest sources for whitewater to the Detroit Area. In fact you will find boaters from all over the Mid-West come to practice here. This is a very safe place, with rescue personnel stationed along the raceway and the ability to quickly "turn off" the water by closing the dam gates.

If you go try to get there before they open so you can see the large cement blocks that will form the rapids as the water rises when the gates are opened.

Ducky rides are great for the first timers! Many veteran kayakers have made wheels to attach to their kayaks for the three block walk back up to the start. This is a great place to watch kayakers close up as there is a sidewalk on both sides all along the waterway. Also check out the fish ladder next to the raceway :-)
