[NEW] A new version of the XV binary is now available, which includes the latest patches and is universal!

About XV

XV is a powerful image viewer/editor widely used in the Unix world. Imagine my dismay when I discovered that it (a binary) wasn't available for OS X...

Fortunately, compiling John Bradley's official XV distribution (v3.10a) on Mac OS X requires only minor tweaks. Unfortunately, this last official release dates back to 1994, and since then, people have assembled many patches to add things like png support.

About this version

This most recent binary includes Greg's XV Jumbo Patches. To avoid dependencies on external libraries not available on standard Mac OS X installations, libTIFF (v3.8.2), libJPEG (v6b), and libPNG (v1.2.12) are statically linked into the binary.

You will need X11 installed to use XV. While it is not installed by default, it can be installed from the Mac OS X installation DVD. You will also need Mac OS X 10.4.4 or above (the binary was compiled on 10.4.7). It is a universal binary, so it will run natively on both PowerPC and Intel-based Macs.

Lastly...

When I have time, I will be rolling these changes into the XV Fink package, of which I am the official maintainer. See this as a preview of things to come. =)

More information on XV is also available on the official XV website.
