Believable characters are the most important feature of any book, whether fiction or nonfiction, because even if you're a genius at telling a story, readers won't follow for long if they find the people you're writing about dull, one-dimensional or unbelievable. While you might already know this, you probably also know that creating and developing great characters is a task easier said than done.
Through this book I show you that creating truly great characters does not begin by staring at a blank page or computer screen. Rather, the process is completely organic and begins inside of you. Instead of encouraging you to get in touch with some mysterious inner green thumb, however, I delve into the concrete skills you'll need to seed, grow and ultimately shape your characters.
Along the way, we look at a variety of examples from past and present literature while growing a character to further illustrate the process. I also provide exercises at the end of each chapter, which if completed, will help you create and develop your own characters so after finishing the book, you'll be able to put it down and let the characters lead onward. While a marvelous prospect, an even better one is that as your characters grow, you will, too. Not only will you develop an ability to think at an almost microscopic level, but you'll come to appreciate that it's only by getting your hands dirty and working hard that you can achieve what you most want, characters that don't just grow into average specimens, but rather bloom into gorgeous, unique and eminently believable beings.
