We regard our sponsorship of the Bacardi Limited Biennial as an enormous honour. For over 30 years, since taking up residence in Bermuda, the Bacardi family has expressed a desire to extend the knowledge and appreciation of fine art, first through the design and decor of the Bacardi Building itself, and then by the subsequent use of the building to provide introductory exhibition space for many of Bermuda now-successful artists. In those early days, of course, the Bermuda National Gallery was still but a dream. This is a proud moment for Bacardi Limited. We are proud to be associated with the Bermuda National gallery and proud to acknowledge the efforts of all the artists who entered for possible selection for the biennial exhibition. It is through all those who entered that we truly exercise an opportunity to celebrate further the diversity and talent within our culture. Without this expression we fail to grow both individually and as a people. We wish to congratulate every artist who submitted their work. I like what the American novelist, Saul Bellow, had to say on the subject of art: “Art has something to do with the achievement of stillness in the midst of chaos. As stillness that characterizes prayer too, and the eye of the storm... an arrest of attention in the midst of distraction.” |
