The Bermuda National Gallery's Bacardi Limited Biennial has become the most significant exhibition on the calendar for our Bermuda artists. Every two years the Biennial provides a national showcase reflecting the breadth and diversity of Bermuda's emerging arts scene and the growing recognition of this juried exhibition in the wider arts world means that it is the beginning of its international exposure.

The 2002 Bacardi Limited Biennial is the fifth staged by the Bermuda National Gallery, which this year celebrates its 10th anniversary, and the third to be sponsored by Bacardi Limited. We congratulate Bacardi for their long-term support of the arts in Bermuda and thank them for their continued and generous support of this important exhibition. This support has enabled the National Gallery to confidently plan ahead to present a first class exhibition incorporating top quality international jurors and the production of a catalogue that remains the most complete record of the Island's contemporary artists.

A record 43 artists are represented among the 83 selected pieces on show - in total 62 artists submitted 415 works which cover painting, drawing, graphics, collage, assemblage, photography and sculpture by established Bermuda artists, and 14 "new faces", exhibiting in the Biennial for the first time.

Artists must be Bermudian or resident in Bermuda to be eligible for the show. We salute all the artists who submitted to the selection process and congratulate those that have been selected. It takes courage to put your work on the line to be considered by a prestigious international jury. It is also a learning process, where the experienced jurors give valuable feedback to the artists. We do not award a best in show; all those selected are considered winners and it is our hope that those who were not successful this year will submit again in two years' time.

Submissions for the show were selected by two outstanding international jurors: Dr. David Boxer, artist, curator and Director Emeritus of the Jamaica National Gallery, and Dr. Virginia Mecklenburg, Senior Curator of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Dr. Boxer and Dr. Mecklenburg are the respective curators for the national collections for their respective countries. They were a delight to work with and we hope this will be the beginning of a fruitful relationship between our organisations. It was not only valuable for the artists, but our staff and trustees benefited greatly from their experience and advice.

The aim of the Biennial is not only to challenge the artists themselves, but also to expose as many people as possible, both residents and visitors, to the work of our talented local artists. We hope the fact that the Biennial runs until September will encourage as many people as possible beyond the vibrant arts community to view the show and become familiar with our contemporary Bermuda masters.
