Banish Quicken™ From You Mac Desktop!

By Michael Elliott

One of the negative things about being a Mac user, is that there are no commercial personal finance Software available outside the U.S and Canada. Intuits™ Quicken™ for Macintosh™ only supports the U.S & Canadian Dollar, Federal Taxes, and for some odd reason, provides no support for multiple currencies such as Pounds Sterling or the Euro.

This straight away becomes a problem, being that I live in the U.K. I would prefer to use my native currency codes GBP, so I decided to search for alternatives. Unfortunately what I found were several good Small Business account's programs, which were not appropriate, & Shareware which were poorly designed, lacked features, and not worth the price they were charging.

For a while I used Virtual PC™ in order to run the U.K versions of Microsoft Money™. Both applications worked O.K , but I felt that running Microsoft Windows on top of the Mac's beautiful user interface was just not the answer!.

"GnuCash is a fast, free, and mature double-entry personal & business accounting system available to Unix user's running the X11 Windowing system...."

Microsoft Money™, like Quicken™ had too many, features & gimmicks, that with each release as both companies franticly tried to compete with each other felt 'bloated' . Determined to find a better product, it was to my Amazement that a solution to my problems finally did arrive, but from an unexpected source....the Unix world. GnuCash is a fast, free, and mature double-entry personal & business accounting system available to Unix user's running the X11 Windowing system.

With Mac OS X, Apple decided to use the power and stability of Unix to be at the foundations of their new operating system. It's use not only means that Macs are extremely crash proof, but it has also has meant that the move to a Unix platform has brought new software development to the Mac.

Unix programmers are now writing software for the Mac and vice versa. However there are still masses of Unix applications which don't run natively on Mac OS X's brushed metal interface. In January 2003, Apple added X11 support to 10.2 (Currently in the form of a beta release add-on.), Mac users could now have access to hundreds of Unix applications, with only a simple recompile. Thanks to Open source developers, programmers who collaborate to make software freely available to all.

Available via the Terminal application or through the X-window system also know as X11, Unix's favoured graphical user interface (GUI). This guide was designed for Mac OS X users who would like to use available X11 software, but do not have any understanding of the unix terminal and what it does. Now here's the easy part...

On the next few page links found below, I will guide you through some simple steps of setting up your Macintosh™, the process of downloading the applications needed to acquire GnuCash, the setting up of key app's such as Fink Commander in finding the dependencies (ingredients!) and how long at will take all to compile (cook and simmer!) on your cool virus free Mac!.

What You'll NeedNeed To install GnuCash 1.8 or later on your Mac running 10.4 (Tiger) You will first need to install a few extra items from you OS X CD or DVD discs, as well as download an application to help obtain the packages needed the software working on your mac, click here to find out more...

Installing GnuCash on your Mac Once you have installed the additional software needed to start installing GnuCash onto your system, this section will explain extactly what to

The Rough Guide to GnuCash Don't be fooled into thinking that just because this application is free, that it is underpowered. there is alot going on within this app than meets the eye. Here's my rough review of this software as well as quick guide to help you get started..
