Episode Guide

Right ladies. So far, I have seen the episodes shown in the second screening, comprising Bookshop, Ladies and Drink, and those transmitted. The titles below were used in production, and have kind of stuck. The order given is that of expected transmission based on the most up-to-date information available. Of course, the episodes that have gone out already have already gone out, so the order is correct. Clear? Clear.

  1. “Queen”. The Queen comes to visit the pub in the celebrations for the 500th anniversary of the East End. Chas ’n Dave are booked for a right Royal Knees-Up. Unfortunately, things are not all as they appear.
Tx 24/06/2001, 21:50, BBC2. Version: fake laugh track.
  2. “Drink”. Competition with another local sports pub is hotting up, so Barry and Garry accept the challenge by their rival landlord to a drinking competition. It’s vital they win, or they will have to close, but Garry can’t hold his drink, so he goes in search of some training from the world’s finest. But can they get away with it without breaking the Pearly Queensbury Rules and, crucially, the Cockney Code? Includes a parody of Fight Club.
Tx 01/07/2001, 22:00, BBC2. Version: fake laugh track.
  3. “Bookshop”. Tamsin Greig plays Julia Robbins, a wealthy US movie star who moves to the east end as she’s told it’s the new Notting Hill. Barry and Garry devise a scheme to draw Robbins, and thus customers, into their pub, by making it into a bookshop. However, when Robbins finds out that her trust has been betrayed by lover Dodgy Phil, she moves out of the area.
Tx 08/07/2001, 21:50, BBC2. Version: reduced fake laugh track.
  4. “Sixties”. The pub is turned into The Cockney Cavern, a music venue. The next big teen sensations, The Cockneys, come for the warm up gig.
Tx 08/07/2001, 21:50, BBC2. Version: reduced fake laugh track.
  5. “Caine”. When scientists prove that pubs which become restaurants make the most money, Dodgy Phil has the idea to turn the pub into a restaurant. When Barry and Garry reveal they can only cook toast, it’s decided that the restaurant needs to be a celebrity restaurant, where people don’t care what they're eating. So the pub is turned into a themed Michael Caine restaurant. The real Michael Caine seeks relief…
Tx 15/07/2001, 21:50, BBC2. Version: reduced fake laugh track.
  6. “Ladies”. When three rival groups of football supporters occupy the pub, terrified of drunken male violence Barry and Garry decide to open a women's pub. Garry is especially keen on the idea, imagining a utopian existence. Unfortunately, the contractor they hire is not all she's cracked up to be. The plot of this episode is virtually indistinguishable from the Springfield Monorail episode of The Simpsons, but the jokes are completely different. Germaine Greer (author of The Female Eunach) guests singing Stand By Your Man. Her real voice? Probably
Tx 22/07/2001, 21:50, BBC2. Version: low laugh track.
