Moore Marriott (1885–1949)
Moore Marriott, born George Moore-Marriott and blessed with dark, curly hair, made his first stage appearance at the age of 5 as a boy dancer. His father had his own theatre company with which Marriott made many appearances as a boy. He made his first film when British cinema was still in its infancy. Some sources say that he made many early silents for the Hepworth company, but no records exist. Marriott himself thought that, counting those early half- and one-reelers, he had made nearly 300 films! This is not as impossible as it sounds, as Harold Lloyd made over 500! Marriott starts to be billed in the credits of movies from 1920, often playing morose, unsociable roles. He became quite popular by the late 1920s, playing even one or two leading roles. These included the naval hero in Carry On! (1927). (For those of you familiar with the Carry On series of films, this was not one of them! However, Charles Hawtry did appear in several of Hays later films.) With the coming of sound, Marriott started playing character roles. These generally consisted of garrulous, toothless old codgers 20 or 30 years older than he actually was. At the end of his association with Will Hay, he made a film in which he costarred with Graham Moffatt, supporting Will Fyffe and Margaret Lockwood, Owd Bob. Graham Moffatt had made a film with Lockwood the previous year, Dr Syn. Moore Marriott was cremated at Golders Green Crematorium on 14 December 1949.
