The other characters - series 1

Series 1 | Series 2 | The Specials

Keith Bishop: Ewen Macintosh

Of all the minor characters, Keith has the largest cult following. Summed up by his speech in the series 1 training episode, Keith is possibly the least ambitious character. He hates his job, but like Tim seems unable to escape it. He apparently wants to appear in a rock band, but as so often in the series, Brent uses this revelation to get his guitar, and Keith is simply left ignored.

As for info on Ewen, best go here, the homepage of the comedy group he’s in. Or you could read an interview with him on this site, here. If you need a comparison, think of how Benicio Del Toro turned the fairly inconsequential character of Fenster in The Usual Suspects into one of the most memorable of the film, and you’ll have a good idea how Ewen forced all of us to look forward to the next Keith moment.

Jamie: Jamie Deeks

I‘ll be honest little is seen of Jamie except for the cutaway shots of the staff working. From what we have seen, he likes to flirt with the ladies, and wears a leather jacket.

Jamie Deeks is in the same comedy group as Ewen MacIntosh, and, yep, you guessed it, all the extra info you want to know about him is also on their site.

Ben: Ben Bradshaw

Ben is best remembered for having his trousers removed in the comic relief episode. Or maybe being the third man in the “Manamana” singing opening to the second series. Keener fans will remember him being chucked out of a meeting after making a rather unfortunate comment about Donna’s tunnel. Hmm.

Ralph: Alexander Perkins

I don’t know what Ralph looks like! But he’s definitely in both series. He looks slightly different in series two apparently, which is confusing for me.

‘Fruit Picker’ in Nature Boy, ‘Young man’ in The Sins and ‘Foundry Man’ in Dalziel and Pascoe, all filmed within the last two years, means that Alexander is looking forward to his next character who has a real name.

If you want to see what Alexander Perkins is up to these days, check out his website.

Phillip: Phillip Pickard

Hangs around the office not respecting David Brent much. Given the odd line. He’s no Keith though!

Philip Pickard has previously been in an episode of Mr. Charity, a BBC TV film ‘Deceit’ and like Julie Fernandez has also been in Dangerfield. He has been cast as a police constable in all of the above.

Emma: Emma Manton

Emma, one of the women working in accounts. A very quiet, inoffensive person, a conclusion drawn from her only having about ten words to say during six hours of of The Office.

Emma Manton has more of a past than I initially reckoned, but just not in television. Theatre, and especially musical theatre is her area of expertise, so if they ever do a karaoke at Wernham Hogg...
This of course, is cheapening her achievements, and I for one would like to see her display her horse riding skills.

Emma’s agents page, which you may find useful if you want to employ her, or at the least see her looking a bit nicer than when she’s in character (and get a full CV of course).

Shelia/Mouse: Jane Lucas

Almost always seem with Emma, Mouse also works in accounts, and also has very little to do in the series. The reason for the double name is that although she’s called Shelia several times in the series, the official site has her desk labelled as Mouse’s, so there.

I’m not sure if it is Jane Lucas who plays Mouse, having arrived at the conclusion she does through a process of elimination. Either way, there’s not much info about her out there.

Lee: Joel Beckett

Lee. Dawn’s fiancee. Currently works in the warehouse of Wernham-Hogg’s Slough branch. Not a big fan of Tim’s, may suspect he has feelings for Dawn but knows he’s not going to act on them.

Joel Beckett changed his name from Joel Bygraves at some point in the past.

Glyn: David Schaal

Works in the warehouse.

Former credits include Gareth Spencer’s dad in Grange Hill, and a two minute role in the excellent but not overly known 15 Stories High, which was Sean Lock’s sitcom before you ask.

Donna: Sally Bretton

Donna

Daughter of Ron and Elaine, currently living in David Brent’s house.

Sally also appeared in Harry Enfield's Brand Spanking New Show, the film comedy Peaches, Goodbye Charlie Bright and Happy Together.

If you want to know more about Sally Bretton then check out this very informative fan site here.

Jackie: Angela Clerkin

Jackie had very little to do in the first series of The Office. Most memorable is a cutaway of her calling Brent a “wanker” after the whole good news/irrelevant news situation.

I don’t know anything about Angela Clerkin.

Malcolm: Robin Hooper

Best remembered for being annoyed for Brent slapping his bald head and going on about Benny Hill. Also was the most vociferous when Brent told everyone they were going to lose their jobs and he was getting a promotion. Malcolm also was one of the first to know that Brent only didn’t get his promotion due to high blood pressure. Things were looking bad for Malcolm at the end of series 1, and it seems apparent he was fired sometime before the merger with the Swindon branch.

Robin Hooper is the only cast member to have been in an episode of The Famous Five, Robin’s other past exploits include Fellow Traveller, Being Human and Martin Chuzzlewit.

Ricky Howard: Oliver Chris

University graduate, only there as a temp. Not much known about his past, but listening carefully, Ricky “managed to scrape a first”. One of the least experienced actors in the show, his only other credit so far is a small part in an adaptation of the novel Lorna Doone.

If you’re a fan of Oliver Chris, then why not join the Oliver Chris club here.

Stuart Foot: Robert Ince

Plays the male secretary interviewee in episode 5. Doesn’t get the job. A Warm Carton of Milk really.

Robin Ince: All round top bloke!
He was also one third of the writing team for Meet Ricky Gervais, along with Mr. G himself and Jimmy Carr, who was in a different writing trio that came up with a film called The Colour of Funny, described as “indescribably bad.” If you’re like me, then his face will have really bothered you in one of those where did I last see him ways, but eventually I got it. For Robin appears with Ricky on MTV in a series of very short sketches set in a record shop, but let’s hear from Robin himself, in this extract I nicked from a page of his which can be found here.
“Earlier in the year Ricky and I wrote and performed a bunch of idents for MTV which went on to win three awards at some kind of prestigious awards ceremony. I presume it was prestigious, neither of us was there, but it was in a posh hotel. We have now filmed a load more for Christmas and the New Year. They are one minute sketches about two guys who work in a tiny record shop. Ricky is generally abusive to me and tries to touch me while talking about Daphne and Celeste being pelted with urine. These shorts are highly autobiographical. I also appeared in The Office on BBC2, some people though it was a blink or you'll miss it part, but I checked, and even someone with naturally moist eyes would have to blink at least ten times during my screen time.”
And there’s another nice site about him here.

In 1997, he performed for British forces participating in the NATO-led Stabilisation Force in former Yugoslavia. See, you do learn something new every day.

Joan: Yvonne D’Alpra

The cleaner. Was also a member of the jury in Little Mo’s court case in Eastenders.

Sanj: Paul Sharma

I need to write something about Sanj here. Not that there is much to write. He pops up for one scene in the first series, mainly to lead-in to the suggestion that Brent might be a bit of a racist. But that’s quite a strong word. Hopefully series 2 will reveal a bit more. (Update: It did, he’s left.)

Alex the fork-lift truck driver: Neil Fitzmaurice

Not often noticed, but Neil Fitzmaurice was being hired in the very first scene of The Office (“I can make that dream come true, to, AKA, for you”), and was fired in the last episode of the first series. Best remembered for arguing with Brent about why he was being fired and not Anton, an argument which thanks to the help of Gareth descended into what exactly a pixie is.

Neil Fitzmaurice is best known for playing Ray Von in Phoenix Nights which he also co-wrote.

Karen: Nicola Cotter

Hired as Brent’s secretary in episode 5.

Nicola Cotter also appears in one the pilots and Meet Ricky Gervais, so she’s probably a mate.
