Those
of you interested in Jeremy Hardy may also be interested
in Mark
Steel. He has a book out, Reasons to be Cheerful, which is a
trip through his youth as he attempts to overthrow the evil
Thatcherite
and Majorite junta, and his disappointment with Blair. I found
the book consistently funny, well researched and very illuminating
for a reader who was not around at the time. Anyone whos
enjoyed Speaks to the Nation, or any of Mark Steels
radio programmes, should read this book. There are several
references to Jeremy in there too (around p. 185). Like
Jeremy, Mark Steel also supports the Socialist Alliance,
and stood as a candidate in the Greater London Authority elections,
receiving over 1000 votes.
Fellow
contributor to the News Quiz, with a very kitchen sink view of
life, but in a funny way.
Ben Elton (Man
from Auntie period)
He
used to be brilliant, perceptive and polital. The Man from Auntie
was
his
funniest and most sophisticated show. However, now he's been exposed
as an unprincipled Andrew Lloyd-Webber collaborator whose most
biting material was about microwaves.
Bill Hicks
A remarkable
late comedian who had much in common with Jeremy's view of the
world.
His six stand-up albums are rightly considered classics. Strongly
advised. Some DVDs.
Chris Morris
A satirical
genius. There is much more to see on him at cook'd
and bomb'd.
Michael Moore
Probably
the world’s richest satirist, with fantastic movies Roger
and Me,
Downsize This and Bowling
for Columbine to his name, as well
as the essential book Stupid White Men. Check out his
site.
