About me
I was born in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England
in August 1974. The son of Gordon, a professional guitarist and
teacher, I began my study of the guitar at the age of 12 and quickly
proved to have a natural talent with the instrument.
After 2 years of training under the watchful eye of my father,
I was taken to Peter Wiltschinsky, of the Hill/Wiltschinsky guitar
duo, to continue my studies. With the help of Peter I gained
my grade 8 with merit, a mere two and a half years after
first starting
to play!
I was then awarded a place at the City of Leeds College of Music,
where I was fortunate enough to come under the influence of Graham
Wade, a concert guitarist and writer of great renown, who specialized
in the life and work of the Maestro, his friend Andrés
Segovia. Graham’s opinion of me was summed up by his comment
the first time
he heard me play: “Ah! The hands of Segovia!”. I continued
to absorb all that Graham could teach me and after three years,
achieved my degree with honours before embarking
on a highly successful teaching career. I also continued my
endeavours on the Electric and Bass guitars with a view to expanding
my
musical
and guitaristic knowledge. In no time I found myself teaching
both of these too, simply because someone asked for lessons!
Throughout
my musical career I’ve given many recitals, to a wide range of
audiences. In addition to serious Classical
concerts, I have performed a number of times for charitable
functions
such
as BBC Children in Need, at York Minster. I made my début
in 1991 as part of a summer music festival, playing the Concert
on G Major for Two Mandolins by Vivaldi (transcribed for
guitar) with my father, this concert was very well received
in the
local press.
After
several years focusing on teaching, I am now keen to perform
once again as I thoroughly enjoy communicating with
audiences
in this way and showing them my ‘take’ on the
standard classical repertoire. To this end, I recently
gave a concert
at the Ealing
Guitar Society in London which proved to be an enjoyable
evening for all involved. I am still very happy to take
on private students,
whether interested in classical, electric or bass.
I
live in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, less than five minutes from
the A1. If you are interested in booking me for a recital,
or
would like to
enquire
about guitar lessons, then do please email me for more
