Ellie Markovitch, a native of Brazil, has been a staff photographer at the Herald News since 2000. Markovitch started photographing Mary Polanco and her family in 2001 at a cancer support group and followed them until 2003. Markovitch graduated from the University of Texas with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. As a teenager, her travels in Africa inspired her to become a photojournalist. She has traveled on assignment to South America, El Salvador, India, Poland and Turkey. Her work has received statewide commendations. She is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.
