Slice the apples thickly. Stew in a skillet with added liquid (orange juice or water) until pulpy, then drain if necessary and put into a deep baking dish.
Mix flour, butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together until you have a crumblike consistency. Sprinkle the crumble over the apples and press down lightly. Top with the Demerera sugar. Bake at 400degF for 20 minutes until golden brown.
Extra pulped apples can be frozen until the next time to make a crumble, as can extra crumble mix itself.
Notes
Instead of plain flour, you can use a mixture of oats and brown sugar.
