Because he disregards Yoda's advice about not needing his weapons, he carries unecessary baggage. These weapons are symbolic for the fear and conflict inside Luke that he was unable to let go of. Taking them with him invokes his worst enemy who appears as Darth Vader but turns out to be Luke's own self.
