Did you miss me?

A test post after mucho computer trauma...hope the blog survives when I hit "Publish"

For those of you wondering about the benefit of web-based applications, I now have my own cautionary tale, namely this blog. Of my many blogs this is the only one that is powered by a desktop application, iBlog.

That means it lives on my desktop computer, and lives and dies by that computer's health. 10 days ago, my desktop died. (Insert Aiiieeee screaming noise here.) We're still trying to figure out exactly what's wrong with it, after an incomplete and ultimately inaccurate diagnostic from the so-called Apple Geniuses.

When I bought my laptop i did synch it up with the desktop, so a version of iBlog lives on the laptop, but I have not kept it synched since that March 2007 initial synch, so if I tried to write a new post via the laptop and hit "Publish", all the posts written on my desktop would be lost. So, that's a non-starter.

Now, we do a nightly back-up in my house (do you?) so we knew that at one point we might have to call on that back-up and re-load it somewhere if we couldn't revive my desktop. But we were avoiding it, since it's 120GB big. And it's not like we could just load it onto my laptop, since by now, my laptop is completely not synched with the desktop, and is smaller than the desktop and could not, for example, accommodate my music collection.

Finally last night I could not stand having my personal blog be dead and silent for so long, and we went through the process of replacing the version and records for the iBlog application on this laptop (which were only current back to the day I got it and synched it up with my desktop to begin with, back in March 07!) with the version from the back-up. It's not just the app itself, you have to find the associated document files and the associated back-up files in the Library and basically search for everything iBlog related and move it onto the laptop replacing what was languishing there unused in over a year.

And now I'm going to try to save this post and publish the blog and PRAY I don't overwrite and erase posts.

And with that, I will end this longest test post ever, and see what happens...
