People should be ashamed of themseves. ASHAMED. I'm certainly ashamed of
them.
President Obama's remarks for tomorrow...yeah,
that's some scary shit. <eyeroll>
So, as is normal, the White House has released
the
prepared remarks President Obama will give at a high school in
Virginia tomorrow.You should read
them. Go ahead. I'll wait.I
kept reading and reading. Waiting for the indoctrination to begin. Waiting for
the socialist theory to start. Waiting for the evil, the EVIL that was surely
contained within to make people go completely off their rockers, as
they have been doing.Instead
the speech was motivating. And full of those ideals that the right wing thinks
they OWN, like responsibility, accountability, self-direction and
discipline.Instead the speech was
relevant. Citing goals and visions of the future that today's kids might aspire
to and that today's adults should want them to aspire to. Not just to cure
cancer, but to invent the next iPhone. Not just to teach kids like themselves,
but to start companies that create
jobs.Instead the speech was moving.
Telling stories about growing up with a single mom, without a lot of money, not
fitting in, not always being the perfect kid...but choosing the right path and
turning away from a dimmer future to seek the brighter
one.I'm so disgusted with certain
factions in this country right now, I can barely
speak.What makes it even more
disgusting is that many presidents, just in my lifetime, have addressed kids in
a similar fashion, and were sometimes much more political about it. Oh, but
that's right: Those were Republican presidents, so i guess that's OK
then.For example, check out Reagan's
1988
speech to school kids. [Link to
video.]Or, read
the transcript. [PDF.]You
know if I'd been a parent back then, I'm not sure I would have appreciated him
making politicized remarks to my kids about low taxes and religious
faith.I don't know whether the right's
mock outrage is purely politically-based, or if there's a dash of good
old-fashioned racism thrown in for flavor. Either way. they should be ashamed of
themselves.
