Project Runway: the Who is Daniel blowing edition?
Am I the only one who saw muslin peeking out
everywhere?
Hey I'm not arguing about talent, and I'm not
saying I would have sent him home, but shouldn't it be mentioned that it didn't
look like Daniel even
finished?
He used flowers? Big whoop, those straps looked like plain old muslin hanging
out, and so did part of the bodice. I'm outraged,
outraged
I tell you!
But let's back
up.
The designers were taken to the
flower district, told to make an outfit for a garden party, but using only
supplies from three flower/plant supply stores. (And although it was unstated,
it seemed that they were allowed to use muslin as a foundation for their
garments too.)
All of the designers
seemed stunned at first, but it actually ended up bringing out more creativity
in most of them.
Kara, for once stepped
up, and IMHO should have won this week's challenge. Her bodice was just
beautiful, both the rattan back (or whatever that material was) and the textured
dried flower front. She was also way kind enough to help Chloe with her
over-ambitious leaf-gluing process. I thought Kara's dress had the most sass and
the most visual interest by a quite a large
amount.
Speaking of Chloe: she's very
talented, no doubt, but her style of minimalism is going to be hard-pressed to
drive her to victory in this kind of competition. I mean, if that dress wasn't
one-note, I don't know what is. A little sprig of lavender at the waist-band
really doesn't wow me. It was lovely, but sedate...yes it looked wearable, but
by a fairly staid person.
I thought
Nick's dress was certainly NOT vulgar, I don't get that judge's comment that
he's always a little vulgar at all! I quite liked the design, but I agree that
the fit didn't seem quite right. He visualized something beautiful but had
trouble executing to that
vision.
Santino's dress was the usual
over-done, over-cooked piece of whatever. OK, they keep telling me how creative
and talented he is, but I just don't get it. He has toned his attitude way down,
so that's nice, but whenever his models walk out my first reaction is usually
"yuk." This week I wrote down one word: "hideous." Just a bunch of waxy leaves
all mish-mashed together. Sure, there were layers and textures, but unlike
Kara's effort, they didn't seem to have a point or plan...just thrown up there
(somewhat like Guadalupe's hideous snap-on fabric flowers from the week she
lost.)
Lastly, the winner and
loser:
Andrae's loss is understandable
because his dress was the least creative. It's a lovely Jackie-O silhouette,
which pretty much defines that it's not original, and it was all made of this
moss. It really did look like a door mat. I still would have sent Santino home,
because Andrae SO deserved to win
last
week, butit's hard to argue with this
decision.
Daniel's win is a bit more
mystifying. As a side note: I finally figured out what last week's Daniel dress
reminded me of: that blousy ivory top reminded me of a big bulb of garlic, not
an orchid. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. This week? It just
didn't look finished to me. I saw muslin peeking out, plus the straps looked
like plain old muslin too, I just don't get why no one mentioned it. I too like
the flower effect trailing down past the waistline. But honestly, it's not like
he cured
cancer by including those flowers. And you
might have thought so from the way the judges were talking about
it.
Anyway, interesting
challenge.
Maybe Kara is coming on
strong in the end, but that was probably just a
fluke.
With Daniel's 4 wins now, it
seems likely he'll win, and I'm betting he'll be joined in the top 3 by Chloe
and Santino...because the judges seem t allow Santino to get away with crap work
and crap vision because he's so "talented and creative", meanwhile they get on
Nick's case for every little thing. They probably secretly believe that those
who teach can't do. (Except Tim Gunn, who's a teacher, so he likes Nick a
lot!)
That's it...see you next
week.
