This Month's Silicon Veggie

Was all about how I anticipated surviving my ten days of overseas travel, vegan requirements and all

Usually I have a pretty blase attitude towards traveling and my diet. I'm not very good about packing vegan goodies along, and I figure that wherever I land, I won't starve. I may not eat well or heartily, but I won't starve.

But my recent trip to Africa was different. It started when the Kaiser Permanente travel nurse gave me literature recommending against eating any fresh fruit or vegetables.

That knocked me back a bit, I mean...fruit and salads are my fall-back when I travel. Maybe I won't get a tremendous amount of protein for two or three days, but that's OK. So, now I was not only thinking about how long this trip was, and about how or where I was going to get my protein, now I was being told to avoid everything else I could normally eat too!

So this month's article outlined all the foods I planned to pack for myself.

And it was a very good thing I packed those things, because I did end up relying on them.

(Of course, I also did end up eating fruits and vegetables while I was there...although salads did scare me enough that I could never really fully load up on them.)

Packing a jar of peanut butter in my checked bag? I'm going to do that every time now...what s lifesaver!
