Project Runway recap

Obviously full of spoilers

This episode was kind of a bummer. And not just because cute little Nick went home instead of annoying big Santino, but because I'm beginning to feel one thing:

If 24-48 hours is not enough time for ANY of the designers to do a really quality job, then extend the time, because it's no fun seeing poorly made almost un-finished crap every week.

Nary a week goes by but just about everyone has problems with puckering seams and things having to be glued on model's bodies and stuff falling off. And I'd rather give them a little extra time and see beautiful results. Because oh, I know, time pressure is part of being a designer. BUT NOT 24 HOURS KIND OF TIME PRESSURE.

There, I said it, and I feel better.

For those who didn't watch, the theme of this week's episode was "Makeover". Each designer was assigned another one of the designers and assigned to make them over head to toe.

So, let's run down the work of our final 5:

Daniel, making over Chloe.
My problem wasn't that it was 80s, or that it was "not Chloe", my problem was that the color combo of red and brown is kinda butt ugly, dude. That hideous mock croc brown vest over what could have been a hot little red dress was just very unappealing. And strings hanging off the hem? Really not classy.

Santino making over Kara
OK, I know the conventional wisdom is that Santino didn't have time to finish his outfit because he was helping Kara so much. I didn't see that. He suggested madras, OK. He suggested putting some fabric on the inside of the collar, OK. He gave her some ideas, but did you see him touching the work? Um, no. She made all that stuff, and on her own...and it was both finished and professional-looking. If he's so brilliant why was that jumpsuit an unholy mess?? Puckery and ill-fitting. Sure it was nice to see Kara's bod, but he should have made more of an effort to make it tight and well-fitting. Otherwise, it's just trampy. And what else did he even do with her? Not much. Fruffier hair and some eye make-up. No accessories, no real make-over other than putting her in that god-awful, unfinished jumpsuit.

Kara making over Santino
See previous comments. It looked nice. She got it done. She actually worked with her client (Santino) to make sure the made-over look was a look he'd actually want to have. What's so wrong with that?

And the winner is Chloe making over Nick
Seems to me Chloe got as much help from Nick as Kara got from Santino. This was nice, although I have to say, again, not very exciting or unusual. A basic look. She made the back of the vest pink. Nice, but not earth-shattering. Nick was working it, and he did look fabulous...and the cleaningup of his beard was a good idea too. But much as I'm not a fan of Santino's "I'm going to do everything off the wall and weird and call that 'creative" approach, I beginning to also not be a fan of Chloe's smooth, minimalist, but not at Armani/CK level approach.

And the loser is Nick making over Daniel
I totally bought Nick's vision of Daniel as the thin mauve Duke. Very retro mid-Century Mary Quant moddish, with some 80's glam thrown in. Daniel is a skinny, pretty boy. I just didn't see the big deal that he looked a tad effete. I thought Daniel looked good, but the suit was unfortunately poorly constructed. More puckering up and down every seam. Really unfortunate.

I still would have sent that overbearing, arrogant, can't finish his own crap because he's too busy mocking and commenting on other people's crap Santino, though.
