Today's Expand Your Musical Horizons Suggestion
Self-Defense,
by former Replacements front man Paul Westerberg just shuffled its way through
my speakers, and I was reminded how much I love this
guy.
My S.O. can't understand how I, a
singer who is all-too-willing to critique other artists, can stand artists like
Westerberg, or Lou Reed, or Tom Waits...all of whom have voices that aren't
exactly smooth and silky. But there is something authentic about the way their
voices fit their music. I wouldn't mind people covering their tunes. But you
have to hear the original versions before you can really understand
them.
My other favorite Westerberg
song, Born For
Me, joins Joe Jackson's
Be My Number
Two among the great love songs for wounded
people.
"When
the loneliest eyes and the emptiest arms finally decide to
meet..."
