Today's iTunes Purchases: 09/27/05

All you need to know: Kate Bush

Thought I might augment this category and tell you what music I buy from iTunes each week. New music is released on Tuesdays. And yes, there is rarely a week that goes by when I don't pick up a little something, and not just the Free Download of the Week.

Speaking of that...today's free download was Let Go by BarlowGirl. This band sounds a bit like an Evanescence wanna-be. You know it's harmless, but wouldn't be a song I'd ever wake up thinking I had to hear.

But on to the music I spent hard-earned $$ on:

The main thing you need to know is that Kate Bush released a single today, in anticipation of her impending November album. Bush, one of my favorite artists ever, hasn't released a studio album in a stunning 12 years. If you like Tori Amos, Paula Cole or any other number of female artists who are idiosyncratic you can bet that they stole just a bit of those idiosyncrasies from the original: Kate Bush. The single is called King of the Mountain. It's a moody piece, full of atmosphere and anxiety. I'm listening several times to figure out if I love it, or if it simply is whetting my whistle for more.

I also bought a new single from Paul Weller, he of Jam and Style Council. This is an acoustic 2-song set. Not sure it's his best work ever, to be honest. Both songs are a bit repetitive.

I also went the single route for the release of the original soundtrack from the movie Rent. I already own the original cast recording from Broadway. The cast is much the same, and frankly all beatification of composer Jonathan Larsen aside, I have always loved half of this score and hated the other half. Being able to cherrypick the songs I already know I love was great! Although frankly I'm not sure I needed to download these. Same actors. Same songs. Sounds the same as what I already own. Ah well.

Lastly, I went South of the border to buy Chayanne's new album Cautivo. Chayanne has a nice voice and is a little cutie. I have one of his odler albums and enjoy it. But this album seems a bit egregiously cheesy. Acceptable background music while I work, but it doesn't make me stop and listen to it.
