Some updates
It turns out Sadie has a hemangioma - a tumor
of the blood vessels basically, on her heart, so there's not much more they can
do. They drained her pericardium (the sac around her heart) and she is feeling
better now, but it looks like it'll happen again in a few days. Poor girl. She's
not even five yet. My folks are going to let her just fade away the next time it
happens. :(
We've been planting a bit
here - the blue potatoes are going in new lasagne beds, since they don't seem to
mind growing on brand new layered ground and there are about nine squares of
direct sown greens. We tried to evict the pigs from the spring garden this
afternoon by reinforcing the chain link where they've been ducking back in, to
no avail. They DO seem to respect the electro-net now though, so progress is
coming, even if it's excruciatingly slow. I had the idea to run a hot wire a few
inches off the ground on their side of the chain link so we'll try that.
Hopefully we'll hit upon the winning combo tomorrow before it rains too much,
and then I can get the brassica seedlings in (kale, two types of broccoli, red
and green cabbage) and the leeks into the ground.
There's a livestock auction coming
up, and we're hoping to pick up a few hens there, if the prices are lower then
last year. (It's a fundraising auction for the young breeder's association) I'd
love a nubian - but I'm looking for a registered doe in milk or pregnant, which
may be hard to come by. Last year there were hundreds of boer goats, and not
much else.... Uh oh, I'd better go - Georgia is spackling herself with falafel
:)
