Things on My MindWe lost power last night from about 5 to 11:30,
so, computer-less, my mind raced with things I wanted to blog about. Here's some
of them.
E's family came over for dinner this weekend - our first big gathering here - it was really nice. We opened up my first can of salsa -it was still good - success!) and I made quiche with garden veggies, greens, and homemade rolls. Eliezer's grandma, who can be as picky as me, ate three servings, which made me really happy. This is mostly the Sanchez side of the family (E's mom's family) - Poopy, Tio Kenny, G-ma Bennie, G-Ma Lu, Eve, Mark, Barbara, and Me - E was taking the picture. In my husband's family, there is barely anyone with a "real name", at least that anyone remembers. Puerto Ricans are infiltrating the countryside - watch out y'all.
I also wanted to put some "before" pictures up of
the coop facilities... this is what we're working
with...
Here's the front of the coop - underneath all of that bittersweet it's much sturdier then it looks, and the front door still works and latches. The concrete floor was a big bonus - it has about three or four inches of leaves on top of it, so it wasn't till we were getting down and dirty exploring that we realized it was actually poured concrete in there. Landlord J's family used it to house their hounds- they would let them out and take them across the street into the woods to hunt for what they call in Trinidad "bushmeat" - a.k.a. whatever you can catch! The doghouse is where the coop will be - it's a pity that Landlord J tore the red doghouse in the pic up before we moved in, I guess he thought he was improving the look of the place - little did he know of our big chicken plans then! (Tough he loves the idea now) So, with the dog house history, we'll have to get some wood to build the coop ourselves and work from the ground up. This site, Backyard Chickens, is a great resource thus far! Around the homestead we are in a bit of a money crunch - funny how moving from a 400 dollar a month apt. to a farm can do that to you, isn't it?! :) I crunched some numbers and am feeling a bit better now, just taking it one bill at a time, although still pestered at living paycheck to paycheck. To alleviate some of our current worries in a small way, I need to tackle E-Bay big time - books, aquarium stuff, it's all gonna be up on the auction block soon enough. :) When E and I moved, we were just in awe of the amount of stuff we had - we do not need this much STUFF!!!! For people who aim to practice voluntary simplicity, we still have SO MUCH unneccesary, unused STUFF. Well, Goodbye STUFF. If anyone is interested in "In the Sweet Kitchen", a Jo-Anne's complete book of random crafts that covers just about everything, random aquaria stuff, and whatnot and has a ostrich feather duster or breadboard to barter, send me a line. Hugs y'all - thank you so much for following me to my new virtual homestead. I love my blog women! p.s. We are getting our new bearded dragon, Zena, this Sunday - hopefully! It all depends on the current owner's schedule. I can't wait to meet my new girl - did you know female bearded dragons have a submissive gesture that looks JUST LIKE they're waving to you ? Ani is Ms. tough grrrl, like her namesake, and prefers biting and thrashing to waving but I'm hoping Zena is a "waver". It is so precious! ! (and of course, I'm thrilled to meet and greet the hens when we finally figure out where/when we're picking some up!!!) E's carpentry assignments are really piling up for this weekend - I hope I can dig up some "extra" money so he can buy wood and get started on Sunday. . Posted: Thu - October 16, 2003 at 10:51 PM |
