The search begins...
One of the many revelations of starting our
house explorations is that, indeed, as I had always suspected, I am a land
hungry real estate developer at heart. Or rather, I am a land hungry "grab it up
BEFORE a developer can get to it" zealot inside. I love this place... but with
no answer yet and my mom's rumor that the state has a 20 foot easement (which
would effectively condemn our house since we're within 20 feet of the road) to
make our road a four lane strip somewhere down the line. Well, broadening our
horizons never hurt.
We saw the
quirkiest, cool house today - but after coming home to OUR tiny house, realized
it was too small - if not now, then certainly in a year or two. An original
toll-keeper's post when the main drag was a toll road in 1850, it has all those
wonderful quirks of ancient house, and the 6 foot ceilings to match (ours are a
towering 6.5 by comparison :) An awesome house, though, surrounded on three
sides by unbuildable marsh - the spring peepers and birds were making a
beautiful racket the whole AM we were looking at it. I'm going to see another
place - a 5 acre horse-ready place tomorrow. Just to see....
The more simple. practical me is
starting to emerge from my mortgage-anxiety induced fog, and think that we might
be better off going with land and building something really simple to start. We
could get more acreage for our money that way, and we certainly have youth and
strength on our side to clear the land, put up fences, etc. - even if we don't
have the money on our side.
There
are so many neat things out there though - so many possible versions of the
future, I love exploring. Most of the larger pieces of property are also
businesses ~ a landscaping & garden supply place., a 12 kennel building next
to a house with a pet sitting/kennel service permit that comes with the
property. So very cool... I'm highlighting, and tearing out pages, and
thinking, thinking, thinking! My next topics of research are - how much does it
really cost to build a simple ( two to three bedrooms, 1 full bath....) house?
Any links would be MUCH appreciated!
