Moving on Out - With Goats!

the buck
Hey all - well, we've been busy here! An ad on one of the chicken forums has quickly turned into a brand new addition(s)! to the homestead - a trio of pygmy goats. Not many people milk pygmies, but some do, and I plan on joining their ranks. The does are about a year old, and the buck is about the same age - we'll keep them together and hopefully the girls will be pregnant very, very soon. 5 months from now we should have kids, which we will sell, hopefully, to 4H kids, and I'll milk the girls!

We bought goats milk to get used to the taste, and E likes it just fine - a relief! I'm having a harder time, with my sensory disorders and AS, but I had a sip today and will try adding a spoonful to a glass of cow's milk tomorrow and working my way up. There's always goat cheese and yoghurt! I think it's a good start - the price is right and so is the size of these little guys... We pick them up this Saturday, and D and I will work on putting up a fenced enclosure for them this week after work. Lots of research to be done!

the does
We found out today that Landlord J has decided not to sell - disappointing, but we're actually pretty happy to at least have a definite answer. We love it here, but at least now we KNOW. And so the farm search begins. I saw a absolutely awesome dutch colonial on 3 and a half acres with a three stall pony barn, outbuilding with water and electric, and even a little in ground pool from the 50's. It's out of our price range, but still inspiring! (It's not THAT far out so I can actually imagine finding something a bit smaller in cheaper part of the county to move to) So that's that. Now I know what I'll be doing all summer - feeding goats and meeting with real estate agents and brokers.
