Hailing from Nevada, Ohio, Texas, California, Peru and parts unknown, the cast of Extra Medium is constantly changing as only the city's most dynamic and prolific sketch comedy performance group must. Born of humble beginnings in the tiki lounge of the historic Jasmine Tree restaurant, Extra Medium was founded by Nicki Toma and Danny Norton when collaborator Jihad Qutub declared their previous sketch ensemble, Star Can't Dead, defunct. Unwilling to leave the quaint stage, bamboo decor and raucous audience, the hybrid format of live sketch, short film and stand-up comedy in a monthly showcase of Portland's popular and underground acts united continued with long-standing member Scott "Hecktow" Klatt. As members left and others from the ranks of local stand-up and theater joined, fascinated by the strange world of never-to-be-repeated, slap-dash sketch performance, the format evolved to ensure stronger, more consistently funny content. A year and a half later, an entirely new cast join Danny in a leaderless collective of writers, dirtectors, filmmakers and performers who often trade these duties and honors. Which means we argue a lot sometimes, like, "who the hell thought it was a good idea to have a live bear on stage?" or "I really thought we were mature adults who wouldn't let a little physicality compromise our common professional endeavors."
