March 1st & 2nd: Yosemite, Firefalls

I made a quick trip to Yosemite, as it was probably the last chance to capture the Horsetail natural firefalls. It was very interesting to see the event happening, and see live one of the images made famous by Galen Rowell. It would have been nicer to have better water flow, but I can't complain, I will try again next year.

I met fellow photographer Xavier Cohen to go photograph around. Initially, the idea was to carpool for the 135th Anniversary Lighting of the Pigeon Point Lighthouse with the original Fresnel light. Xavier suggested going to Elkhorn Slough for wildlife photography, it was definitely an experience for me, as I have not done wildlife before, and neither photographing from a Kayak. We did that, lunch, and then headed for Pigeon Point Lighthouse.

Every year on the Saturday closest to November 15th, public and photographers in general have the opportunity to experience the original lighting of the lighthouse, they keep the light static for 5 minutes to allow photographers to take the 24 light beams without any use of photoshop :-) ... This was my first year on this event, and I decided to try for one composition and hold it for those 5 minutes. You only have a couple of chances within those 5 minutes to make it happen. Next year I will try a different composition.

I decided to go back to my archives for photos I have taken in the past year, which I have not included yet here. Usually when you go out to photograph, you take a lot of different photos, but at that moment you make a particular selection that delegates other photos to go directly to the archives. Going to the past, maybe now your selection can be different, and also your processing techniques have evolved to make the photos look better than when you initially processed them. Here is a first set of photos from the archives. Enjoy!

Conchita and Vanessa came back from Venezuela, and this was the last weekend before Vanessa goes back to school. On Friday, I decided to try to capture some clouds in San Francisco, as I saw that the previous day was kind of cloudy, and the weather forecast promised some clouds. After going to the Golden Gate Bridge, and the fog was covering it complete, I tried again for a Panoramic from Pier 7 to complete the set. The weekend was nice, as our final vacation days before going back to school, we went to the movies, played with Vanessa's Nintendo Wii, and went to the zoo. I took some photos at the zoo before running out of batteries.

I use a lot the 'California Coastal Records Project' web page as a way to scout areas along the beach, and I usually look for interesting rock formations that could be photographic subjects. I found 'Shark Tooth Beach' which seemed to be a good place to photograph, so I drove to the location to verify it, and bingo!!! the place is beautiful, I just need to go back with better weather. Here you have some photos to give you an idea of the place.

I spent my weekend along the San Mateo Coast. Saturday, I took some friends to Bean Hollow with its "out-of-this-world" feeling, shapes, and lines. Then, on Sunday I did a scout on my own for new places in this section to photograph, and I'm so happy I found a place with a lot of potential, and due to being hidden and kind of hard to get to it has that virgin feeling of a new place.

North East Coast (July 7th - 13th)

I spent a week (from July 7th to 13th) in Boston area due to a training on my work. I flew to the area the weekend in order to be able to drive around, and photograph. I spent some time between Portland in Maine, and Rockport, MA. All week was a combination of stormy weather, with fog, and finally at the end of the week clear sky. I was fortunately to capture photos with different weather. I hope you enjoy it.

Eastern Sierra June 2007

I had been to Death Valley early this year, but had not realized the amazing beauty of the Eastern Sierra until now. After studying a little bit the moon schedule for June, I noticed that there was going to be a full moon with moonrise and sunset close to the horizon which could bring good opportunities to photograph the moon with the landscape, I decided to pay a visit to Mono Lake (for the first time), and also take the time to scout other surrounding areas. This visit took me to the White Mountains with its Bristlecone Pines, North Lake with its clear reflections, and the ghost town of Bodie. In summary, This was a really great weekend for photography, and the start of my coming trips to this area, as I didn't even scratch the surface of locations to photograph. These photos were taken during the weekend of June 29th to July 1st, 2007.
