Flat, Triangular Winged Moths

This is the largest category I've made. Many of the moths are strikingly patterned, and a few are brightly colored.

8803 Catocala relicta (White underwing) (Burlington, 7/31/05 6pm) This beauty had black and white striped underwings. Alas, I couldn't coax it into showing them while sitting.

8801 Catocala ilia (Ilia underwing) (Lexington, caterpillar 5/29/06 1pm, moth 7/1/06 11am) The caterpillar was found on an oak tree trunk. It thrashed wildly to appear threatening, periodically flipping upside-down to display its purplish belly. This is the first caterpillar I've raised to an adult. It started to pupate underground a day or two after we found it. I believe it emerged the night before I photographed it, although it is possible that I didn't see it for a day or two.
