Now it's in a metal box. | ![]() Bison bison is the proper name for the American bison (also known as the American buffalo). These are the animals that wandered by the thousands on the prairie before we nearly wiped them out. They are the animals referred to in that old song, "Home on the Range." |

Find your way to the Tuttle Creek Reservoir Dam, which is on route 13 in Riley County, KS, several miles north of Manhattan off Tuttle Creek Blvd. On the west side of the dam, going northwest off route 13, is Tuttle Cove Rd. (also known as county road 897S). As soon as you turn onto this road, take and immediate right up the hill to the Observation Point. From here you can survey 360 degrees and see the reservoir, the lower pond called "Tuddle Puddle" by the locals, and a small herd of bison to the south. You are going to go mingle with these "bison" to find your letterbox. This view from the lookout will help you locate where you are going. Head back down to the dam, and park on the west side of the dam, in a small parking lot just to the east of road Tuttle Cove Rd. and just to the west of the tower on the dam. Across the road you will see a path that trucks have been driving on. Follow it until you can see the bison up close. Go to the big one in the rear, and stand at his head, facing the same direction (roughly westward) that the bison is facing. You will see a line of cedars ahead and to the left. Head toward the trees, facing about 10:00, and take approximately 60 steps. You should end up at one of the trees that has a dead tree sticking out in front of it. From there you can see a rock fence, no longer in good repair. Head toward the left end of the part of the rock fence that is still standing. If you now take 3 steps to the right - that is, along the better part of the fence - you will see a rock of a slightly different color. Behind that rock is your treasure. Be sure to hide it carefully again when you are finished. | |||
