Research Philosophy

The role of a college is to forward knowledge and the role of a teacher is to lead students and colleagues on the path of discovery.   The role of an artist is to observe their environment, to question those observations, and to pose that question to their audience.

I am a practicing artist who is constantly researching and creating new work that evolves over time with new ideas and knowledge.  I need to keep my knowledge and experience base current and my creative ideas fresh.  In this spirit, I challenge myself by consistently investigating new concepts and techniques. Sometimes my research is done in traditional areas such as libraries, museums, and my studio. Oftentimes, as reflected in my artist statement, my inspiration comes from everyday objects and experiences.  Research and creative exploration are necessary to expand knowledge of the world and of oneself.  My knowledge and experience is then shared with students by example or directly through researched information being applied to the curriculum. When I take on the role as a student learning through research and creative endeavors, students themselves are encouraged to research and to create.
