SMS Law: FUD by Another NameFrom the SH
Archives
To its credit, the
Wall Street
Journal has refused
to succumb to the mass hysteria generated by reports that the Chinese
government will be mining SMS messages for counterrevolutionary content. The
consensus among thinkers is that first, such a mass monitoring is not practical.
This suggests that either a) the monitoring will be selectively applied to those
the government already suspects of subversive activity; or b) the entire
announcement is a propaganda move to try to get said suspects to stop using SMSs
because the government knows it cannot monitor them. Either way, the government
wins because SMS is no longer considered a safe means of sub-rosa
communications. Sometimes, the FUD is better than the
reality.
