A Podcast Geography lesson 2

Using a compass
David Baugh
Denbigh ICT Centre
Aims
What is a compass? Points of the compass How a compass is used on a map
What is a compass?
At the North Pole there North Pole is a magnetic •eld that is strong enough to attract a magnet A compass shows you where North is by using a small magnet that is attracted to the North All sorts of people use a compass to help them find there way to places sailors, hill walkers, pilots, soldiers What is a compass?
Here is a compass with a red pointer that has a small magnet on it. How a compass worksSo when a compass is held out the needle will turn to point to the North Pole So when a compass is held out the needle will turn to point to the North Pole
Now we know where North is we can work out the other directions The opposite to North is South Then half way between North and South going clockwise is East Half way between North and South going anti-clockwise is West On a map North is shown at the top
So if I wanted to travel from Southampton at the bottom of the map to Newcastle halfway up the map So if I wanted to travel from Southampton at the bottom of the map to Newcastle halfway up the map I would have to travel North Can you work out which direction I would have to travel to go from Lyon in Central France to Marseille at the bottom of this map? Yes you would have to go South More Points of the compass
To make things more accurate we need more points on our compass so we can add points West between the ones we have
So half way between North and East we have West and halfway between North and West we have North-West Halfway between South and West we have South-West and halfway between South and East we have South-East So on this Map of Wales to go from the capital city Cardiff in the South to the university town of Aberystwyth So on this Map of Wales to go from the capital city Cardiff in the South to the university town of Aberystwyth you would travel North West Can you work out which direction I would have to travel to go from Dublin the capital of Ireland to Cork on the south coast? You would have to travel South-West Test yourself
Now that you have learnt the points of a compass and how they are used on a map it is time to test yourself. NGfL Cymru
