What UC/CSU requires for admission

We're dedicated to providing our students with the experience and knowledge necessary to make science useful in their lives and to enable our students to improve the lives of others by learning how to discover new things.

Also take a look at the UC vs. CSU page which describes the difference in requirements for UC as opposed to the CSU system.

Science is a little different than the other subject areas in the way that the University of California/California State University system requires science courses. UC requires a minimum of 2 years of “d” courses (see the course catalog for which courses are “d” credit) with 3 recommended. The courses must be at least 1 course from two of the areas listed here: Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. Please note that 9th grade science counts as an elective course, “g”, not as a “d” course.

Admissions at UC are becoming more and more restricted to students who meet the recommended guidelines. What this means for you is that if you plan to go to UC or CSU (or any other selective college) you should:

  • take 4 years of science, including 9th grade science (required for graduation) and Biology (required for graduation)
  • make sure to take at least one of these: Physics, Chemistry, or Astronomy/Space Science or AP Environmental Sci ence before you graduate
  • take one other “d” course including Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy/Space Science, AP Environmental Science or any Life Science course you want before you graduate

Our Mission:

We're dedicated to providing our students with the experience and knowledge necessary to make science useful in their lives and to enable our students to improve the lives of others by learning how to discover new things.

Department Goals:

1. Increase science enrollment in elective classes.

2. Prepare students to make career choices in science.

3. Get students excited about science by having them participate in relevant, realistic, hands-on science activities.

4. Improve scores on state-mandated standardized assessments.

5. Support each other in our efforts to become better professional science educators.

6. Connect all major activities and course descriptions to the California Science Standards, and analyze course descriptions and test results for standards we may not be meeting.
