Suggested Career Path Science Sequences for Deer Valley High School Students (Draft November 2003)

The table below shows the course offerings at each grade level, and what sorts of requirments and recommendations each course offered meets. Most students should plan on taking 3 or 4 years of science if they plan to attend college (for any major) or 4 years if they plan follow any career requiring any knowledge of science. This table is a draft document and is still being reviewed by the Science Department and DVHS Administration.

Consider the following table of college majors, which appeared in an article at MSN's Encarta web site:

http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/departments/elearning/?article=whatisyourdegreeworth

Chemical engineering: $51,853
Electrical engineering: $49,946
Computer science: $47,419
Accounting: $40,546
Information sciences: $39,718
Marketing: $34,628
History: $32,108
English: $30,157
Psychology: $27,454

You should note the top three require advanced science degrees such as physics or chemistry.

Career Path Descriptions:

Entry Level: Prepares the student for college entry for majors which do not emphasize science or for beginning level jobs which do not require an advanced scientific background. Examples of careers include accounting, clerical, warehouse management, sales, animal husbandry, service careers.

Technical Level: Prepares students for applied science or technical careers. Meets most requirements for college admission in most majors. Example careers include medical technicians, research assistants, computer programmers, paramedics, law enforcement, automotive repair, journalism, etc.

Professional Level: Prepares students for advanced science careers such as doctors and nurses, research scientists or university positions, astronomers, physicists, engineering (mechanical, electrical, and others), chemists, environmental analysts, inventors, computer engineering, and others.

Grad

Required by Antioch Unified School District and the State of California for Graduation

UC-d

Meets UC/CSU "d" lab science requirement.TWO years are required, THREE strongly recommended; at least one course must be from biology and the other from physical science. 9th Grade Science does NOT meet this requirement.

UC-g

Meets UC/CSU "g" elective requirement

B/P Biological or Physical Science classification

Key to table entries:

  • P= physical science, B= biological science,
  • Yes = required (AUSD), meets requirement (UC), or is recommended by department
  • No = Does not meet requirement
  • OK = may be sufficient in some unrelated career paths
  • NR = not recommended for this purpose

Our Mission:

We're dedicated to providing our students with the experience and knowledge necessary to make science useful in their lives and to enable our students to improve the lives of others by learning how to discover new things.

Department Goals:

1. Increase science enrollment in elective classes.

2. Prepare students to make career choices in science.

3. Get students excited about science by having them participate in relevant, realistic, hands-on science activities.

4. Improve scores on state-mandated standardized assessments.

5. Support each other in our efforts to become better professional science educators.

6. Connect all major activities and course descriptions to the California Science Standards, and analyze course descriptions and test results for standards we may not be meeting.
