Multi-Venue Multi-Tasker

I've been getting a lot of questions about the business (via emails) lately and thought I'd answer them here, while I have the time to do it, so I don't have to repeat myself (I can refer people to this posting).

First Question is about the number of companies people usually freelance for. I don't have a hard answer to this question, but I can tell you what I know of by my 13 years of experience. Most freelancers work with a handful of clients (between 1-3 on average). I work with about 10 on a regular basis.

Second question is about the type of work freelancers usually are asked to do - whether it be Lighting, Audio, Video, or Graphics. Most freelancers in Hawaii stick to one of the above, most of the ones on the mainland stick to sub-categories of them (in the mainland a cameraman is a cameraman, a tape-op is a tape-op, and that is usually all they ever do). I am what you would call a "true" Utility-Guy - I do "all of the above"...

So there you have it - I work in all venues on Maui, and the job I do that day depends on what is needed. I do this for a few reasons:
1) It keeps life from getting boring - everyday is different, not just the same thing over and over again...
2) It keeps me working - anyone can plug me into any show, and they do...
3) It keeps me from getting burnt out - I'll be the Video/Graphics Engineer for a week (dealing directly with the client), the next week I'll run spot or A2 (and barely deal with the client), and the next week I'll do a bunch of trucking (and never meet the client)...

As long as I'm working, I'm happy. I'm just as happy paging cable as I am being in "Video World" pushing buttons. Work is work...
