Just finished up their show today (been at the MACC since Thursday). It was pretty cool to see all these guys in the same place at the same time. Were it not for a flip of a coin (literally) I would have been one of them.
I ran video and graphics for the show. The cool thing is that I got to do it in the way that made both myself and all the presenters comfortable.
Basically, I had one computer on the podium (which allows the presenter total control and also the ability to see which slide they are on without turning around), and one computer backstage with me (for backup in case the podium had issues and for presentation evaluation).
Both computer were networked - so, basically, the presenters came backstage before the show started and gave me their presentation, I check it out and made sure it ran and then I transferred it to the computer on the podium.
The cool part about it was that all the presenters had their presentation in to me before the show started, so once the show started my job was easy: When a speaker was done I went to logo; then, remotely, I got on the podium computer, closed the presentation which just ended, and opened the next one. When the presenter walked up to the podium, I switched from logo to their presentation, and everything was ready to go for them...
One of the presenters was at the podium while I was doing this and he was amazed - I had total control of the computer, he was just watching me work - I was behind the drape on the backup computer.
A few of the presenters actually looked over my shoulder as I made the switch and they couldn't believe that I had the desktop from the podium computer as a window on the computer I was working on.
It's funny the things I take for granted sometimes - I've been doing these things for so long that I think nothing of the technology I use to do it. It's just a tool - like a hammer, or a saw, ya know?
This had to have been one of the smoothest shows ever, simply because all the presentations were in at the beginning of the day (all three days). I was able to concentrate on the show - and when you are switching video and running graphics it is always a good thing to have your head in the right place, ya know? |
