Mac OSX & Fink

When I updated OSX I was having issues with both AquaEthereal and AquaScribus. They would not open unless opened directly within /sw/bin/ and then they would not run. AquaScribus I could care less about, so I just uninstalled it through fink via the terminal command line. I check out ethereal itself (within fink) and it was definately out of date, so I tried to update it via fink commander. It didn't work, although it looked like it was working, cause fink commander is not ready for Tiger yet. So I went back to the terminal and tried it that way.

While there I noticed that fink itself was out of date so I went to their website and downloaded the newest version of it, removed the existing version off of my comp, and installed the new version.

I then installed ethereal with fink via terminal. When trying to run it I can see that the reason it doesn't open is because something is funky with the gtk. So I find ethereal in /sw/bin/ and click on it. It opens, but when I try to run it, it says that it needs an admin uname and pword. The thing is, it doesn't give me a place to input the info...

I then install xtraceroute from fink via terminal. At this point I'm thinking I don't need fink anyway cause I have the equivalent program in OSX itself somewhere. But if xtraceroute works I may consider keeping it around. I had the same exact issue with xtraceroute as I did with ethereal...

So fink itself isn't ready to go as far as Tiger goes. The good thing is that it should be within just a few weeks cause those guys are usually on it. Even better news is that I don't need it anymore anyway...

So I got rid of fink completely and installed AquaPacket (which calls ntop and works well with OSX without calling up X11 - so it's a good ethereal replacement for now). I also updated TinkerTool and KisMac yesterday which are very cool programs. One note-worthy thing, I installed a program called SideNote - it's a handy thing to have around, I'm really liking this little app...
