| Open Source - Freeware | | Date Created: Mar 28, 2005, 05:40 PM |
Kinda peeved at Version Tracker cause they did a redesign a few weeks ago which makes it impossible to just look at the freeware. Totally sucks! Use to go there and click a button which would just display the freeware - and now that option does not exist...
So now their site is basically a clone of Mac Update - both sites look similair and, if you are a Mac user, they have the same info and downloads. So basically Version Tracker should just get rid of their Mac Support instead of cloning someone elses website...
I just recently started really getting into The Gimp and OpenOffice.org again. I'm to the point where I have actually dumped Photoshop and MS Office from my computer completely. I was in the same spot a few years back when I was hot and heavy into Linux, but when I went back to the Mac I kinda went crazy checking out all the software for it. After a few years of testing and retesting I'm back at the same spot saying the same thing: "I just wasted a few thousand dollars on software that I didn't need. I didn't need it cause there's an open source free version out there that is often times better than the product it is trying to replace." Once again asking myself, "why did I begin the cycle again?"
The one thing that comes of it is that I have tested just about every program for every platform out there. So when my clients call me and want to know about different programs on different platforms, or their derivatives, I actually know...
In all honesty, the only software I have found worth it's money in the last year or so has been from Roxio - everything else has a freeware version that is either the same or better than the product it replaces... |
