Gun Control...

I've just spent the day working with a buddy of mine who I love to work with cause we have great discussions whenever we see each other. Curtis is a big time conspiracy theorists, very smart, very well spoken, very big, and very much a teddy bear. Basically we see everything 180 degrees in the other direction, so we agree to disagree in most cases...

We talked about gun control today - none of his arguements made any sense until he presented his last arguement. I'll tell you what it was toward the end of this message...

First off, let me just say that, I grew up around guns. My father is actually a well known gunsmith. I am just about the best shot I've ever met with just about any gun you could imagine. I was a Gunner, Armorer, and Small Arms Trainer in the military. I'm the guy who taught guys how to tear the weapons apart, clean them, put them back together again, and fire them...

As you can see, I have a very distinct qualification for talking about this subject...

You would suspect, given the last few paragraphs, that I would be for everyone owning a gun. You'd be wrong. The wild west is over and we no longer hunt for food. The only reason I can see for anyone to own a gun is for protection - but if no one owned a gun there would be no reason for anyone to have one. Look at Japan as an example - no guns, no crime - their police do not have guns either...

If you put the entire population of European countries (which have gun control laws) together, you would have a population which would approximate that of the U.S. Now, compare the rate of crimes per person. Compare the rate of murder per person. It's pathetic...

You can do it for any country which has gun control law and get the same result - America is pathetic...

Now, the Constitution of the U.S. says that we have the right to keep and bear arms, but it says that the "well regulated militia" would be the ones to do it. People always forget that first part of the sentence. What this means is that our military personell must bear arms, not our citizens.

At the time the Constitution was written, every American was a soldier, and more than half had to hunt for food, as well as protect themselves from Indians. None of these are issues today.

I do not believe anyone, outside of the military, should touch a gun. On the other hand...

We have them, and they will not go away. American's will not allow the government to take the guns away because that is the power of the average America. Citizens with guns keep the government from going to far. This was not the intent, but it is the reality of the citizens having guns.

America's Founding Father's created a form of government which allowed the citizens to change it when they didn't like the way it was going. This is suppose to take the form of voting - we vote people into office, so, in essence, every few years we get to change the government if we like. The reality is that very few American's vote, they keep the government in check through fear. The government fears the people - PEACE THROUGH SUPERIOR FIRE POWER...

Curtis' point came after I made this last point. We dropped the bomb - and yell for every other country to disarm. We conquered the English, and the Wild West, with the gun - and now they yell for everyone to disarm. All the bangers around the country with guns - it's nothing more than the wild west all over again. You see, it was ok when it was a bunch of white people doing all the killing...

This really made me think for a while. You know what? He's right. He didn't change my mind about gun control, but he made a good, and valid, point...

Bottom line: I personally believe that
1) if you are in a position you can't handle with your brain and your body (with no other weapon), you are in a position you need to get out of.
2) Unless you are in the military, you should not touch a gun...

This is not reality though - I don't think it ever will be as long as America is America. Americans are too lazy. It is easier to sit on the couch with a gun in one hand and a remote in the other, than it is to go to the voting booth. That means they would have to:
1) Register to vote - most American's don't do this cause it means they will get put on the list for jury duty. Kinda funny, how are you going to change anything unless you take part in it?
2) Keep up on current events
3) Find out who is running
4) Find out what they stand for
5) Decide who to vote for
6) Get up
7) Drive to the Voting Center
8) Stand in line (this is the biggest killer)
9) Vote
This is way to much work for the average American...

But I'll tell you what:
-> If you've never stood on jury duty, I don't ever want to hear a complaint about anything to do with American Law.
-> If you've never voted, I don't ever want to hear a word about anything those who were voted in have done.
-> If you've never served in the military, you should stop abusing your freedom, go to the recruiter and start fighting for it. You don't know what freedom is until you've fought for it. Those who fight for it, seldom abuse it; Those who abuse it have seldom fought for it...
