Task Force and the Human Rights Campaign — yesterday condemned the Feb. 27
arrest and detention of Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida.
Smith was arrested during a heated hearing before the Largo City Commission in
Florida, during which the commission voted 5–2 to begin the process of
firing its 14-year city manager, Steve Stanton, because he announced his plans
to transition from male to female.

yesterday that "committed same-sex couples must be afforded on equal terms the
same rights and benefits enjoyed by opposite-sex couples under the civil
marriage statutes." The majority opinion left to the legislature the decision
of whether to confer the rights and benefits by means of Civil Unions or by
amending the marriage laws to allow same-sex couples to marry. The legislature
has 180 days in which to act.
Wednesday - October 25, 2006NJ Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage expected at 3:00 pmAccording to the New Jersey Judiciary web site, the NJ Supreme
Court is expected to issue a ruling in the case of
Mark Lewis, et al. v. Gwendolyn L.
Harris, et al. this afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
The ruling is expected to answer the question of whether the NJ Constitution
requires the State to allow same-sex couples to marry.
