Sen. Specter refused to swear in Attorney General Gonzales at Senate
Judiciary hearings
Senator Arlen Specter, chairman of the Senate
Judiciary Committee, refused to swear in Attorney General Alberto Gonzales at
the NSA domestic spying hearing this morning, permitting him to testify without
the threat of the penalties for perjury.
The Democrats on the committee challenged
Specter's ruling that Gonzales should testify without being under oath, but they
were out-voted by the
Republicans.
Specter announced that
Gonzales had told him that he had no objection to being sworn in; so there was
no excuse for not doing it and for having a big fight with the Democrats at the
start of the hearing. What is Specter's motive? To help shield the
administration? To stage a fight over a side issue in hopes of boring the
public and causing them not to listen? It made no sense; and when things in
politics make no sense, they become suspicious, don't they?
