Feds slow in responding to hurricane Rita disaster in southeast TexasThe
Beaumont
Enterprise reported, "Frustrated emergency management
coordinators said Sunday they were seeing the same foot-dragging federal
response to Hurricane Rita as their counterparts down the Gulf Coast did during
Hurricane Katrina."
FEMA is withholding the release of badly needed
emergency power generators at Ford Park while they finish their damage
assessment. Jefferson County officials planned to distribute Meals-Ready-to-Eat
from local fire stations, but FEMA is still withholding the MREs. Jefferson
County Judge Carl Griffith is quoted as saying, "They won't let us have them.
They said we had to go through the state—which we already did—to get
them." He said, "We're going into stores and taking food out. We're going to
do what we've got to do to get the job done."
