Bush was personally briefed in advance on the full potential damage of the upcoming hurricaneJudd Legum of the Center for American Progress
said on Democracy Now this morning that President Bush
"was personally briefed by [the National Hurricane Center] and told of the
damage [to be expected from Hurricane Katrina]".
The St.
Petersburg Times reported on August 30, "On Saturday night,
[National Hurricane Center Chief Max] Mayfield was so worried about Hurricane
Katrina that he called the governors of Louisiana and Mississippi and the mayor
of New Orleans. On Sunday, he even talked about the force of Katrina during a
video conference call to President Bush at his ranch in Crawford,
Texas."
The National Weather Service warning at 10:11 CST in the morning on Sunday said this: Devastating damage expected. Hurricane Katrina. A most powerful hurricane with unprecedented strength rivaling the intensity of hurricane Camille of 1969. Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks, perhaps longer. At least one-half of well-constructed homes will have roof and wall failure. All gabled roofs will fall, leaving those homes severely damaged or destroyed. The majority of industrial buildings will become non-functional, partial to complete wall and roof failures expected, all wood-frame low-rising apartment buildings will be destroyed, concrete block low-rise apartments will sustain major damage including some wall and roof failure. High-rise office and apartment buildings will sway dangerously, a few to the point of total collapse. All windows will blow out. Posted: Thursday - September 08, 2005 at 09:40 PM |
