People say they want family entertainment, but porn is where the big money is

The Los Angeles Times reported that porn is so popular that it pays to put out an R-rated movie that will not do well at the box office in order to get it into DVD sales.

R-rated movies don't get the advertising of PG-13 movies. The Times says, "Many exhibitors are reluctant to play trailers for an R-rated movie in front of a PG-13 film. Even worse, R-rated humor is verboten in TV commercials, so it's impossible to show a film's raunchiest scenes on TV."

R-rated movies are growing in popularity with the studios because they are finding it profitable to release them in "unrated" DVD versions. In video stores the raunchy aspects of the films can be advertised, as long as the advertising is honest. The Times says, "In recent years, the real action in the movie business has shifted from theatrical box-office to DVD sales, which now make up more than 60% of studio revenues."

"For all the talk of our country's obsession with moral values, nothing succeeds with the American people like the salacious promise of a little extra nudity or hanky-panky in their DVD packages," notes the Times.
