Cool Mac OS X Software: ClamXav

ClamXav is a free Mac OS X interface to the open source virus scanning sofware ClamAV. It includes a Sentry app that runs in the background and scans new files in the folders you specify. You can set it up to scan all incoming mail.

I remember the early days when there were viruses on the Mac. Most of them were fairly easy to detect and there was a little freeware app that did the job very nicely. Now there are no viruses on the Mac, regardless of what the companies that make expensive virus detection software would like us to believe. Still, I would rather be safe than sorry, but not if it's going to cost a lot when the risk is virtually nonexistent. ClamXav seems like the perfect app for the current situation. Low maintenance and free and based on a popular open source virus scanner, which actually comes already installed on Mac OS X Server.

ClamXav 1.0.4 is a universal binary that works with Mac OS X versions 10.3 and 10.4. ClamXav Sentry and the ClamAV backend are also universal. You can get more info here: ClamXav.
